DeAndre' Bembry has left little doubt this season that he is the most talented player on Saint Joseph's roster. Wednesday night at Hagan Arena, the sophomore continued to prove that he may be the most talented player in the city and possibly the Atlantic 10. Bembry filled the stat sheet in Saint Joseph's 62-56 win over Massachusetts, finishing with 25 points, eight rebounds, seven assists, five steals and three blocks. |
“We really all need to be paying attention. Look at these numbers. He (Bembry) had 25 points, eight rebounds, seven assists, five steals, and three blocks. It’s a shame because he’s going to get overlooked,” Saint Joseph's Coach Phil Martelli said. “He hasn’t gotten Big-5 Player of the Week, he hasn’t gotten Atlantic 10 Player of the Week. He’s going to get overlooked because we are an average team and it’s a shame because he’s having a spectacular year.”
Behind eight early points from Bembry and nine from Isaiah Miles, the Hawks would find themselves with an 21-14 lead just past the midway point of the first half.
Bembry would then be given a breather, and it would become even more evident how critical he is to Saint Joseph's success, as the Minutemen scored eight straight points with Bembry on the bench to take a 22-21 lead, their first of the game.
After heading to the locker room with the game knotted at 27-27, Bembry would come out even hotter scoring the Hawks first 13 points of the half to help Saint Joseph's keep pace with UMass.
"If he was on a team that had 13 wins, 14 wins, you’d be talking about him as an All-American candidate," Martelli said.
Saint Joseph's would take the lead for good on a layup by Miles with 10:42 remaining in the game, as the forward notched the first second half points for a Saint Joseph's player not wearing a #43 jersey.
The Hawks would grow that lead to as much as 10 with 1:12 remaining in the game before eventually winning 62-56.
Bembry would lead the way for the Hawks, displaying his remarkable talent yet again, as he recorded 25 points, eight rebounds, seven assists, five steals and three blocks.
"We’re walking out of a league game with 25 points, eight rebounds, seven assists and five steals," Martelli said. "There are not a lot of guys that have played in this uniform that have those kind of numbers in a game, let alone a league game.
Miles would pitch in 18 for the Hawks on 7-for-12 shooting from the field, as Saint Joseph's picked up their second A-10 win of the season.
The Hawks will look to Bembry again Saturday night, as they face Big 5 rival U Penn in the hallowed halls of the Palestra.
"I just said to the players, ‘whatever you believe in or whatever prayer you say, hit your knees tonight and thank god that you’re going to have a chance to play in the Palestra against a Philadelphia team on a Saturday night in January.' It gives you chills, and if they don’t get it, they’ll get in when they walk in because I understand that the game is sold out," Martelli said.
