Drexel coach Bruiser Flint wasted no time in adding to his already record amount of wins, defeating Rutgers by a final score of 70-59. Yours truly was able to attend the event, since I live in the next town over from Rutgers (East Brunswick). While there were only a few people there, the Rutgers Alumni in my section were especially rowdy and frustrated throughout the game. Leaving the RAC with a Drexel victory made me happy to see those around me miserable. I was able to hear the DAC Pack, but wasn't able to really see them, since I was on the exact opposite side of the arena and the scoreboard was blocking them from me. It was a good game to watch, however.
It was never really in doubt that the Dragons would come away victorious, but they did deal with a few scares throughout the game. In the first half, Drexel got into foul trouble, committing 6 team fouls in the first five minutes of play. Having depth at the guard positions was a major factor in Drexel's victory. When Damion Lee went to the bench early, Tavon Allen was there to pick up the slack.

Allen was the player of the game for Drexel, scoring a game high 21 points and racking up 2 steals and 2 assists as well. Allen really broke out in the second half, scoring 16 of his 21 points in that period. Damion Lee also played very well, despite foul trouble. Lee finished with 15 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists. He had 4 fouls on the game, but played smarter defense at the end in order to stay in the game. Lee showed some terrific leadership abilities out there, which will pay off big time next year, in Lee's senior season.
Chris Fouch recorded 10 points and 4 assists, but was also in foul trouble for a majority of the game before eventually fouling out. The Dragons, just like every other NCAA team, are still getting used to the new foul calling scheme, so expect foul trouble to be a major factor for at least the first half of the season. Frantz Massenat played brilliantly, scoring 12 points, recording 7 assists, and showed great poise in breaking the Rutgers trap defense.
Center Dartaye Ruffin was a huge factor as well. Drexel's strength is it's guard play. Fouch, Lee, Allen, and Massenat all are very capable players. However, they all play guard. Having Ruffin out there to play tough, stout defense goes a long way in the Dragons winning this season. Ruffin makes their lineup flexible and they definitely need him to stay out of foul trouble.
With the North Division wrapped up, the Dragons will head to New York next week, where they will play the winner of the Rhode Island and Arizona game.
