LaSalle basketball is looking good once again, holding off a scrappy Siena squad at the Tom Gola Arena, 78-74. The Explorers got it done at the free throw line, shooting 75% (24-32) from the charity stripe, while Siena only managed a measly 62.5% (5-8).
Other than obviously needing to score more points than the other team, there are many battles that a team needs to win in order to come out of the match victorious. Securing more rebounds, controlling turnovers, and capitalizing on free throws all have a major impact on the game. The rebound battle and turnover battles were pretty much even, so being able to get 19 more points off of free throws were instrumental in LaSalle's win. The Explorer's ability to get to the basket, whether the shot is made or not, will always help them out since it can get them more free throw opportunities and get the other team in foul trouble. Foul trouble left Siena guards Marquis Wright and Marcus White less effective than usual and forced them to use their bench more than the Saints wished.
For the Explorers, Jerrell Wright had a double-double, scoring 15 points and securing 11 rebounds and guard Tyreek Duren scored a team high 20 points. Center Steve Zack had 10 rebounds and played some stout defense in the paint.LaSalle's starting lineup combined for 64 of their 78 points, with the 14 bench points coming from guards DJ Peterson and Khalid Lewis (9 points and 5 points respectively). Peterson had a terrific all around game, also racking up 3 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 steals. This type of effort from Peterson and others off the bench will go a long way for the Explorers. Center Steve Zack had 10 rebounds and played some stout defense in the paint.
The win over Siena brings LaSalle to 2-1, looking to improve to 3-1 in their next match against the Nittany Lions.
