For those who watched, you can agree with me that it was an incredible game from both squads. VCU came after La Salle with full intensity in their Havoc defense, which is just a term people made up to describe the full court press set up the Rams are known for. VCU has their Havoc defense, Shaka Smart, who is considered one of the best coaches in all of college basketball, and talented young players such as Juvonte Reddic, Treveon Graham and Briante Weber. But despite all that the Explorers had going against them, they equaled their opponents' intensity and fought their way back after being down by double digits early in the first half.
Graham and Reddic combined for 61 of VCU's points, but the Explorers kept pace with their own offensive weapons. Tyrone Garland finished with a team high 30 points and was an NBA Jam level of on fire in the second half. Tyreek Duren helped out with 15 points himself, and he also had some very nice assists throughout the match. Steve Zack also had a good performance, finishing with 10 points and 11 rebounds, good for the double-double.
La Salle, after being down a bunch early, came roaring back in the second half and had a significant lead themselves. However, the Havoc defense wore the Explorers out at the end of the game and the Rams were able to tie it at the end of regulation. Finally, in the second overtime, VCU pulled ahead and finished with the win. It was a valiant effort on behalf of La Salle, but it's tough to defeat a team like VCU that wears it's opponents down physically in double overtime. A couple plays here or there would have helped La Salle win, but they gave a great effort out there nonetheless.
