University of the Sciences senior Garret Kerr was named Division II Preseason Player of the Year. On Thursday night at the DAC, he showed Division I Drexel exactly why.
Kerr sparked the Devils from the start of the game, as USciences jumped to an early lead over the Dragons.
Drexel would storm back in the second half, taking the lead on a Damion Lee layup with 26 seconds remaining in the game.
But there was Kerr, waiting for his moment. Kerr would seize that moment, knocking down a three-pointer with 2.1 seconds remaining to give USciences a 54-52 lead and the win over Drexel.

“Really there’s two plays in basketball: Romeo and Juliet and Give Garret the Ball,” said USciences Coach Dave Pauley after the win.
Kerr would find the basket early an often on Thursday night, scoring the first points of the game and never looking back from there.
Behind 14 first half points from Kerr, the Devils would build a first half lead as large as nine before heading to the locker room with a 28-22 lead over the Dragons.
After shooting just 32.1 percent from the field in the first half, the Dragons would begin to settle in a bit following the break, taking a 31-30 lead with 17:32 remaining in the game, their first lead since the early moments of the contest.
The Devils would find themselves trailing 44-40 with just 5:40 remaining, as it seemed as though the Dragons would manage to pull this one out.
Kerr would have other thoughts, however, scoring 10 points over the final 5:40 to lead the Devils in a final charge.
Drexel would regain the lead on a layup by Damion Lee with 26 seconds remaining, but USciences would show great courage and poise, not taking a timeout as they came down the court to find Kerr for the game-winning three.
“I just don't like the other guy to have a timeout, catch their breath and run a set,” said Pauley on not calling timeout after Drexel took the lead.
The Devils’ 54-52 win over the Dragons would mark the first win by a Division II school over a Division I school this season.
“Those guys deserved to win,” said Drexel Coach Bruiser Flint. “They played harder than us from start to finish. They came to win the game.”
The loss drops Drexel to 2-5 on the season, but the story at the DAC tonight was all about Garret Kerr, as the senior stole the spotlight with a 27-point performance.
“I was excited just because this is the first time I’ve had the opportunity to play a Division I team. I was kind of looking forward to the challenge,” Kerr said.
