Coming off their best season in half a century, La Salle entered Tom Gola Arena today with high expectations for the 2013-14 season. The Explorers welcomed Manhattan to Philadelphia on a day when they would unfurl their Sweet 16 banner from the rafters. In front of a packed arena, the Explorers and Jaspers put on a show, needing two overtimes before Manhattan prevailed 99-90.
Unlike many squads, La Salle did not schedule a cakewalk for their home opener, as they faced off against a solid Manhattan squad. Trading points in the first half, the Explorers entered the locker room with a 32-30 lead over the Jaspers.
The Jaspers would take control coming out of the locker room, leading for much of the second half. Down 70-60 with less than four minutes to play, the Explorers got hot, closing the second half on a 13-3 run, culminated by a Tyrone Garland 3-pointer to tie the game at 73 with just 9 seconds remaining.
The game continued to stay close through the first overtime, as La Salle had an 80-79 lead with 23 seconds remaining when the Jaspers sent Tyreek Duren to the charity stripe. Duren would miss the first free throw and make the second to put the Explorers up by two, but the miss would prove costly, as the Jaspers made a layup with 5 seconds remaining to send the game to a second overtime.
Manhattan would take control late in the second overtime and build a solid lead in the waning moments, as they survived this marathon contest to top La Salle 99-90 in the end.
It wasn’t how most Explorer fans pictured this season starting off, but the Explorers lost to a solid squad. Tyrone Garland led a solid effort by the Explorer guards, scoring 28 points. Tyreek Duren added 17 points and 9 assists, while Sam Mills scored 15 points.
The Explorers were outmatched in the paint on the afternoon, as the Jaspers out-rebounded them handily. Jerrell Wright, who scored 16 points, led La Salle’s big men in the contest, but it wouldn’t be enough, as they fell in the end 99-90.
