La Salle will be exploring the U.S. Virgin Islands this weekend in the Paradise Jam. The Explorers kicked things off with a nice win on Friday night over Morgan State. The Bears kept things close for much of the contest, but the Explorers made a charge with seven minutes remaining in the game, opening up their lead, as they won by a score of 78-59.
It was back-and-forth in the first half, and with just under five minutes remaining in the half, the Bears held a 23-17 lead. That's when the Explorers would go on a 15 to 2 run to close the half and head to the locker rooms in Saint Thomas leading 32-25.
Morgan State was not quite ready to go away, as they kept things a bit too close for comfort for much of the second half. While the Bears never held a second half lead, they did close to within single digits with just over eight minutes remaining. La Salle would squash the Bears hopes for a comeback however, going on a run to open up their lead and win 78-59.
The Bears had three players finish in double figures, as center Ian Chiles scored 14 and guards Justin Black and Anthony Hubbard added 12 and 10 points respectively.
La Salle was led in the contest by Tyrone Garland, who finished the game with 25 points, including 17 second half points. Tyreek Duren added 15 for the Explorers to go along with 5 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals. Sam Mills and Jerrell Wright each contributed 12 points for La Salle, as improved second half shooting led the Explorers to victory.
The Explorers still have yet to find their groove this season, but have been steadily improving. La Salle, 3-2, will face Providence in the second round of the Paradise Jam on Sunday.
