La Salle visited the Miami Hurricanes this afternoon in a battle of two Sweet 16 squads from last season's NCAA Tournament. The Explorers struggled to find their rhythm throughout the contest on their way to a 71-58 loss.

The Explorers would jump out to a lead in the opening minutes of the contest, holding a 12-7 advantage over Miami. The Hurricanes would respond with a 10-0 run to take a 17-12 lead and would never look back, heading to the locker room up 34-24.

Behind staunch defense, the Hurricanes began to pull away from La Salle, holding the Explorers to just 32.1 percent shooting from the field in the first half and winning the battle on the boards 23-14.

Miami received contributions from all around in the first half, as Davon Reed scored 8, Garrius Adams and James Kelly notched 7 points apiece and Donnavan Kirk added 6 points and 6 rebounds.

The Explorers shooting would pick up a bit in the second half, as they closed to within seven points with just over two minutes remaining, but Miami would maintain control, winning by a final score of 71-58.

Tyreek Duren led the Explorers in the loss with 18 points, while Sam Mills pitched in 15 points. Steve Zack, one game removed from a career-high 17-rebound performance, recorded a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds, while Tyrone Garland was held to just 3 points on 1 of 7 shooting.

The Hurricanes were led by Rion Brown, who scored 15 of his team high 17 points in the second half. Brown added 9 rebounds in the game as well for Miami, while Donnavan Kirk grabbed 9 boards as well to go along with 9 points.

The loss drops the Explorers to 6-6 on the season as they played their final game of the 2013 calendar year, a spectacular year for the program. La Salle will return to action on January 4, as they face off with Penn at the Palestra.
