Penn and Lafayette played each other hard today. Neither team ever really had a sizable lead, but ultimately Lafayette prevailed and stole a 79-76 victory from the Quakers.
Fran Dougherty led the Quakers with 26 points. 14 of those points came in the first half as Dougherty shot 6/8. The Quakers nursed a 38-37 lead at halftime. Turnovers continue to be a problem for Penn, the team allowing 11 in the first half. By comparison, Lafayette allowed 12 the whole game.
Tony Hicks added 16 for Penn, and Miles Jackson-Cartwright 9, all of which came in the 2nd half. Penn had one chance to tie the game and send it to overtime, but Tony Hicks' last second shot rimmed out.
Seth Hinrichs led the Leopards with 28 points. Despite shooting much worse than Penn in the first half (39.4% compared to 55.6%) Lafayette was able to right the ship in the second half and earn their first victory of the season.
This was not how Penn envisioned this game going obviously. Lafayette should have been a very winnable game, but the number of turnovers needs to be reduced for that to happen. Penn now sits at 2-4 and things will not be getting any easier. The Quakers take on Villanova at the Pavilion, fresh off their upset victory over #2 Kansas.
