The Quakers traveled to New Jersey Tuesday night, as they faced off against the Monmouth Hawks. Penn outplayed Monmouth in the contest, but the score didn't necessarily indicate that, as Monmouth refused to go away. Despite shooting much better than the Hawks, the Quakers turned the ball over 22 times in the game, allowing Monmouth to keep things close before finally closing things out with a 79-73 win.
Monmouth quickly jumped out to a 12-2 lead over Penn, but the Quakers would respond with a 16-0 run of their own to take the lead. The Hawks would battle back, taking a 33-31 lead with 3 minutes remaining in the first half. The Quakers would go on yet another run to close the half however, as they took a 41-33 lead to close out the first half.
Turnovers would continues to be an issue for Penn, as Monmouth refused to go away, closing to within 3 points with less than a minute remaining. With a 74-71 lead, the Quakers would go on to ice the game at the charity stripe, winning by a final score of 79-73.
The Quakers were led in the contest by Jackson-Cartwright, who scored 25 points in the game. The senior guard had a fantastic shooting night, going 7 for 11 from the field, including 5 for 8 from 3-point range and a perfect 6 for 6 from the foul line.
Center Darien Nelson-Henry posted a double-double in the contest, scoring 14 points and grabbing 11 boards. The sophomore center was a big presence in the paint for the Quakers and will be key to Penn's success this season.
Tony Hicks added 13 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals in the contest, as the sophomore rounded out strong play from the Penn guards on the evening.
Penn will next welcome the Penn State Nittany Lions to the Palestra on Saturday November 16.
