In what seemed like a sure victory for the Hawks, Fairleigh Dickinson was able to find Mustafaa Jones on the wing for the game winning three pointer with 5 seconds left on the clock, giving the Knights a 58-57 victory. Jones, a Philadelphia native, grew up only a few blocks away from the Hagan Arena. "I grew up five blocks from the arena. This is my gym, as much as it is theirs." Jones finished with a game high 13 pointsIt was also a homecoming for former SJU basketball player, FDU assistant coach Dwayne Lee, who went head to head for the first time against his alma mater.
After losing Ronald Roberts, Langston Galloway, Halil Kanacevic, and Daryus Quarles from last year's squad, some growing pains were to be expected for the Hawks.
Isaiah Miles, who had his first ever start tonight, finished with a double double, scoring 12 points and snaring 14 rebounds.
DeAndre Bembry, who was a starter on last year's team, was able to get some great looks when he was driving to the hoop. However, he was only able to muster up 8 points on 3-10 shooting.
Senior Chris Wilson will be looked upon to be a leader on this year's team. Wilson looked incredibly comfortable filling that role tonight, controlling the tempo on offense with 12 points and 6 rebounds, as well as on defense with 2 steals.
However, the Hawks really struggled early on against FDU's zone defense. Not many teams will play zone over man, so this shouldn't be too much of a problem going forward. The real problem was the amount of turnovers the Hawks had. They recorded 16 turnovers, as opposed to FDU's 7 turnovers. Protecting the ball and not playing sloppy is something that the Hawks will need to focus on this season.
With such a young and inexperienced team, it can take a bit for Saint Joseph's to hit their stride. Taking care of the ball and being able to finish at the rim will go a long way towards improvement.
