What a night on Hawk Hill! After a disappointing 2012-2013 season in which many experts predicted the Hawks to win the A-10, St Joes went into the season just trying to prove that they belong in the upper tier of the conference. The Hawks picked up right where they left off in Vermont, defeating the Marist Red Foxes 81-62.
Saint Joseph's fan favorite Ronald Roberts had a big game, scoring 16 points on 7-12 shooting from the field. Ron also contributed 10 boards and some stout play in the middle on defense. Halil Kanacevic had a great game as well, finishing 2 assists shy of a triple double. Kanacevic had 12 points, 11 rebounds and 8 assists, flashing that all-around game that most men his size seem to lack. Senior guard Langston Galloway led the team with 20 points and had 8 rebounds to go with it. Eric Kindler was an absolute beast on the boards too. While Kindler had 2 rebounds in a minute of playing time, his average of 80 rebounds per 40 minutes is absolutely mind blowing. One of the main reasons for the Hawks' victory is their victory on the boards, out rebounding Marist 47-26.
Although Marist seemed lost against the Hawks' defense, junior guard Chavaughn Lewis posted 26 points and had 5 rebounds and 5 assists as well. Outside of Chavaughn and forward Jay Bowie, who finished with 11 points, Marist struggled to find any offense in their loss.
Saint Joseph's will face an incredibly tough task ahead on Saturday, facing off against All-American forward Doug McDermott and the Creighton Blue Jays. Last season, the Hawks looked lost against Creighton in Omaha, but they will look to repeat their 2011-2012 performance when they conquered the Fighting McDermotts at the Hagan Arena. Hopefully the Hawks will go to 2-1 after Saturday and look to take control of the Atlantic 10.
