The all-time leader in victories at Saint Joseph's, Martelli has eight seasons of 20 or more victories under his belt, but is best known for the 2003-2004 season, when he guided a team featuring Jameer Nelson, Delonte West and Pat Carroll to an undefeated regular season and the Elite 8 in the NCAA Tournament.
The Hawks would finish that season 30-2 and Martelli would be the consensus national Coach of the Year.
"My successes are directly related to the quality of people who have played for me. To each of them, I am forever grateful,” Martelli said in a school release. “Our players, staff and administrators are wonderful people who care for the program and the University. Saint Joseph’s has always been the perfect place for my family and me.”
Five former Hawks who have played under Martelli have gone on to play in the NBA: Jameer Nelson, Delonte West, Ahmad Nivins, Dwayne Jones and Langston Galloway.
