Saint Joseph’s gave Dayton all they could handle Thursday night in their visit to Ohio.
DeAndre’ Bembry and Isaiah Miles would each record 23 points for the Hawks, as Saint Joseph’s took the Flyers down to the wire.
In the end, however, free throw shooting, an all to familiar foe for Saint Joseph’s, would get the best of the Hawks yet again.
With just 27 seconds remaining, Bembry would find himself at the free throw line for a one-and-one with an opportunity to tie the game. Bembry would make the front end of the one-and-one, but would miss the second, as the Hawks’ opportunity at an upset slipped away in a 68-64 loss to Dayton.

Miles would lead the charge for the Hawks in the half, pouring on 14 points, including four three pointers, as Saint Joseph’s utilized strong shooting from beyond the arc to keep pace with Dayton.
Dayton would begin to open things up a bit early in the second half, but Saint Joseph’s would respond with a 12-0 run to take a 52-49 lead with 10:46 remaining in the game.
The Flyers would seemingly put the Hawks away with just more than a minute remaining, taking a 65-61 lead before a turnover by Miles.
Bembry would have a different idea, however, coming up with a steal and a layup to pull the Hawks within 65-63.
Saint Joseph’s would follow that by forcing a Dayton turnover before Bembry was sent to the line.
Bembry would make the first shot, but missed the second, as Saint Joseph’s felt the wrath of poor free throw shooting yet again in a 68-64 loss.
Bembry would fill the stat sheet in the loss, recording 23 points, nine rebounds, five assists and two steals, but would go just 3-for-6 from the foul line.
Miles would pitch in 23 points of his own, including five three-pointers, but it would not be enough for the Hawks to pull off the upset.
Saint Joseph’s will be back in action Saturday, when they welcome St. Bonaventure to Hagan Arena.
