The Hawks were back in action for the first time since a close loss to Creighton on November 19, as they faced LSU in the opening round of the Old Spice Classic. Hot shooting, especially from beyond the arc, guided the Tigers, as they cruised past the Hawks by a score of 82 to 65.
Saint Joseph's kept things close for the first 10 minutes before the Tigers began to open things up. After leading 23-20 with just under 10 minutes to play, LSU finished the first half on a 23-10 run to head to the break up 46-30.
LSU received a balanced effort in the first half in the process of building a hefty lead, as Andre Stringer and Shavon Coleman each scored 8 points. Jarell Martin had 7 for the Tigers, and Johnny O'Bryant III, Jordan Mickey and Anthony Hickey each added 6. The Tigers were shooting the lights out early, making 58.1 percent of their first half shots, including 8 of 13 from beyond the arc.
While LSU found success from deep in the first half, the Hawks struggled mightily, going 0 for 7 from 3-point range. Ronald Roberts, Jr., paced Saint Joseph's in the first half, scoring 14 points and grabbing 5 rebounds. Louisiana native Langston Galloway struggled in the first half, scoring just 2 points.
The Hawks would close to within 10 points at 54-44 with just over 10 minutes left in the second half, but the Tigers maintained their poise on their way to an 82-65 victory.
The Tigers were led in the win by Stringer, who finished with 18 points. Martin finished with 15 points, while Mickey notched a double-double, with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Roberts, Jr., led all scorers in the game, contributing 21 points for the Hawks, while also adding 7 rebounds. The Hawks shot just 18.8 percent from beyond the arc in the game, while struggling from the charity stripe as well, making just 12 of 26 free throws in the losing effort.
The loss was the second in a row for Saint Joseph's, and dropped the Hawks to 2-2 on the season. The Hawks will next meet the Siena Saints on Friday.
