Wednesday night at UMass, DeAndre’ Bembry couldn’t be stopped.
The sophomore star would go off for a career-high 33 points to boost Saint Joseph’s to a road win over the Minutemen.
Saturday night was a different story, however, as Bembry managed just six points in Saint Josephs’ 63-57 loss to Richmond.
“I just wasn’t knocking down shots that I normally knock down,” Bembry said.

The Hawks would get off to a solid start, using an early 10-2 run to take a five point lead over the Spiders.
With Bembry struggling with his shot, the Hawks would be forced to look elsewhere on offense in the early going.
Behind seven points from James Demery, Saint Joseph’s would find itself with a 21-17 lead.
Bembry would follow that shortly after with a big dunk to get into the scoring column more than 15 minutes into the game, but the Spiders would close out the half strong, using a 13-2 run to head to the locker room up 31-25.
Richmond would make the Hawks pay for their early errors, converting eight first half turnovers by Saint Joseph’s into 10 points. Kendall Anthony would lead the way for the Spiders in the first half, scoring 12 points.
The Spiders would emerge from the locker room looking just as strong as when they entered, opening the half on a 9-2 run to take a 40-27 lead.
Saint Joseph’s would begin to fight back, however, knotting the game at 54-54 with 2:56 remaining.
In the end, Richmond would manage to hold off the Hawks and pick up a 63-57 win.
“It really doesn’t mean anything, to be honest with you,” Saint Joseph’s Coach Phil Martelli said of rallying to get back in the game. “We came here to play a 40 minute game, to win a 40 minute game. We knew it would take 40 minutes, so there is no solace taken that we got back in the game. We have to correct the situations that put us in that situation.”
Anthony would lead all scorers, finishing with 23 points for Richmond in the win.
“We tried a lot of different things,” Martelli said of trying to contain Anthony. “We tried Shavar [Newkirk] on him, we tried James [Demery] on him. DeAndre’ [Bembry] asked to take him the last six or eight minutes. We didn’t do a good enough job, to be honest with you, on the ball screen. We let him get pace coming off the ball screen and we had a couple different calls and we just didn’t execute them.”
While Anthony would excel in the game, it would be a different story for Saint Joseph’s star player, as Bembry finished with just six points on 3-for-14 shooting from the field.
Bembry would contribute in other ways, grabbing 12 rebounds and coming up with one very impressive block, but without its star player finding the basket, Saint Joseph’s would be unable to overcome the Spiders’ bite.
“We were in the game throughout without our two main scorers scoring,” Bembry said. “It just came down to making certain plays, and it didn’t happen.”
