Saint Joseph’s entered Hagan Arena Wednesday night in the midst of a seven game winning streak and looking to garner the national attention many feel the Hawks deserved after starting the season 18-3 and 7-1 in conference play.
By the end of the night, the Hawks saw their resume and NCAA Tournament hopes take a bit of a hit, however.
Led by a 31-point effort from sophomore guard Jaylen Adams, St. Bonaventure would top Saint Joseph’s 83-73, handing the Hawks just their fourth loss of the season.
“Credit to St. Bonaventure,” Saint Joseph’s Coach Phil Martelli said. “I just told my team, the better team won tonight. We’ll walk with our heads down today and then tomorrow we have to come back and be better.”

The Bonnies would soon take control yet again, however, stretching their lead to as large as nine before heading to the locker room with a 42-35 advantage.
St Bonaventure would receive 12 points from Adams in the first half and would shoot 8-for-21 from beyond the arc.
It was in the second half that Adams and the Bonnies would truly begin to heat up though.
As the Bonnies continued to connect from three-point range, the Hawks would find themselves staring at a double-digit deficit. St Bonaventure would stretch its lead to as large as 18 with 3:57 remaining and would maintain its double-digit lead throughout the remainder of the contest on its way to an 83-73 win.
The Bonnies received a stellar outing from Adams, who racked up 31 points, including 19 points in the second half, on 10-for-21 shooting from the field and 6-for-12 shooting from beyond the arc.
“He got a rhythm going,” Martelli said of Adams’ performance. “Credit to him. He played a wonderful, wonderful game at that position and we have to guard it better.”
Dion Wright added a double-double for St. Bonaventure in the win, tallying 18 points and 11 rebounds.
Saint Joseph’s was led in the loss by DeAndre’ Bembry, who recorded 22 points, seven assists and six rebounds. Isaiah Miles would pitch in 11 points and eight rebounds as well, but it wasn’t enough for the Hawks to pick up an eighth straight win.
“I feel like we came into this game a little cocky,” Miles said. “I think this game probably humbled us a little bit.”
Now humbled and having seen its Tournament hopes take a hit, Saint Joseph’s will look to regroup before visiting Fordham on Saturday. With plenty of work to do before then, the Hawks are looking to quickly put this loss behind them and begin a new win streak.
“We have practice tomorrow,” Miles said. “We have to practice hard and focus on Fordham. They’re going to have a sold out crowd and they’re going to try to beat us while we’re down, so we just can’t give them that opportunity. It’s just motivation. We need to keep our heads up.”
