The Temple Owls traveled to Fifth Third Arena in Cincinnati Tuesday night to take on the #19 Bearcats. With an already short roster, the Owls would find themselves without the services of Will Cummings for the game, as the guard was still experiencing concussion symptoms from an injury suffered last Thursday. Temple was able to remain competitive for much of the game, as they have in most games this season, but tired out down the stretch on their way to a 69-58 loss.
Temple took an 11-10 lead just more than seven minutes into the game, but the Bearcats would respond with a 10-0 run to take a 21-11 lead with seven minutes remaining in the half. The Owls would fight back, heading to the locker room down just 27-25.
The two teams would continue to battle in a tightly contested game for much of the second half, as Temple took a 47-45 lead with 7:24 remaining in the game, their first lead of the half. Cincinnati would go on a 16-3 run however, taking a 61-50 lead with 2:49 remaining and putting the game out of reach for the Owls.
As has been the case most of the season, and especially of late with a shortened roster, the Owls wore down in the closing minutes of the contest. With just eight players dressed for the game, three Temple starters were forced to play the full 40 minutes.
Dalton Pepper led all Owls scorers in the loss with 21 points, while Quenton DeCosey added 17 points. Anthony Lee put up a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds, but Temple was unable to make up for the 16.1 points averaged by the injured Will Cummings.
Sean Kilpatrick led all scorers in the contest with 23 points, while Justin Jackson kicked in 15 points and 10 rebounds. Titus Rubles would record a double-double for the Bearcats as well, scoring 13 points and grabbing 12 rebounds, as the #19 Bearcats improved to 16-2 on the season.
With their wings clipped due to injuries, the Owls have struggled mightily, losing their past five games and seven of their last eight. Temple will be back in action on Saturday, as they face Big 5 and City 6 rival La Salle.
