Despite this, the Owls found themselves within striking distance down the stretch, only to fall to the Runnin' Rebels 57-50 in the end. |
"We were settling for shots that really weren't there," Temple Coach Fran Dunphy said following the loss. "We need to be much more patient on the offensive end."
The Owls would start the game off strong, building a seven-point lead just 4:35 seconds into the game. Temple would remain in the lead throughout the half, eventually heading to the locker room of the Barclays Center with a 27-24 lead.
Things would begin to fall apart in the second half for the Owls, however, as they made just 5-of-33 shots from the field, including just 1-of-12 from beyond the arc.
"I thought we challenged shot blockers way too much," Dunphy said. "We didn't pay attention when we tried to drive and we should have kicked it out to open shooters. When we did have open looks, we didn't knock them down."
With the entire team struggling with their shots, the Owls were forced to do much of their damage from the free throw line. With the help of 12 made free throws in the second half, the Owls would be able to keep the game close, pulling within 51-48 with just more than two minutes remaining.
The Runnin' Rebels would play strong down the stretch, however, holding on for a 57-50 win over the offensively challenged Owls.
"We need to work a lot on our offensive game," Dunphy said. "Duke was a very good defensive team and [UNLV] was very athletic. When we tried to get it to the rim they were not allowing it. We were not careful enough with our shot selection. We need to step up and make shots when we get decent looks."
Following the loss, Temple is averaging just 56.5 points per game. A far cry from the powerful offense of last year's team.
