The Temple Owls got off to a rough start shooting in Wednesday night’s contest against Towson, going just 3-for-16 from the field in the first 13 minutes of play.
Luckily for Fran Dunphy and his squad, the Tigers got off to an even uglier start offensively, as they went just 3-for-22 to start the game.
Both teams would turn it on offensively in the second half, however, but Temple would do quite a bit of damage from the free throw line, as they topped Towson 76-64.

“Some games are like that,” Temple Coach Fran Dunphy said. “Obviously we didn’t shoot the ball well in the first half, nor did they, which was a benefit to us. You’ve got to just keep shooting the ball. I thought we made some really big threes down the stretch today.”
The offense was downright offensive for both teams in the early going, as Temple found themselves with a 15-13 lead with 3:17 remaining in the first half.
The Owls would close the half a little stronger, however, heading to the locker room with a 25-20 lead, as both teams shot below 30 percent from the field in the half.
A different Temple team would emerge from the locker room in the second half, as the Owls shot 50 percent from the field to build their lead to as much as 16 over the Tigers.
“It’s just a matter of being confident and keeping your poise about you and shooting the right shots,” Dunphy said. “I thought we had a couple of other possessions where we forced the issue a bit, but for the most part I was pleased with how we played in the second half.”
The Owls would do significant damage from the free throw line in the half as well, going 20-for-25 from the charity stripe in the second act on their way to a 76-64 win.
“I think that’s what gets us going. Being aggressive, attacking the basket and getting foul calls,” Will Cummings said.
Cummings lead the way for the Owls, finishing with 22 points, but doing so on just 3-for-13 shooting from the field, as the guard went 15-for-17 from the free throw line.
The Owls will likely be unable to afford another slow start in their next contest, however, as Temple visits #7 Villanova on Sunday.
“Right now we’re focusing on Villanova, who are a really good basketball team and a great opportunity for our guys,” Dunphy said. “We know what the challenge is.”
