In the first Big 5 game of the 2013-14 season, Temple met Penn at the Palestra to kick off both Philadelphia schools’ seasons. The Owls were in control for much of the game, but a late rally by the Quakers made things interesting down the stretch. Penn’s rally in the final ten minutes of the game gave Temple quite the scare, bringing fans at the Palestra to their feet before Temple eked out the 78-73 win.
Penn led by 5 early in the first half before a 13-0 run by Temple turned the game in the Owls favor. Temple would remain in control for the rest of the first half, heading to the locker room with a 42-35 lead.

Temple would maintain control for the first ten minutes of the second half, taking a 65-50 lead with 9:40 remaining in the contest. That’s when the Quakers came to life. With the help of a 21-6 run, the Quakers knotted the game at 71 apiece with less than two minutes remaining. After trading baskets to bring the score to 73-73, Temple took the lead for good on a Dalton Pepper layup with 45 seconds remaining. The Owls would sink three free throws to close out the game, but Penn had given Temple all they could handle in an exciting Big 5 matchup.

Pepper led the way for the Owls, scoring 19 points and grabbing 9 rebounds in the game. Will Cummings added 18 points for Temple, while Anthony Lee and Quenton DeCosey each notched 12 points, with Lee also grabbing 12 boards as well for the double-double.

Penn’s efforts were led by guard Tony Hicks, who scored 28 points in the season opener on a 12-24 shooting performance from the field. Darien Nelson-Henry added 19 points and 10 rebounds for Penn, as the Quakers fell just short of completing their comeback.

Temple will next welcome Kent State to the Liacouras Center on Monday, while Penn will visit Monmouth on Tuesday.
