Villanova traveled to Hawk Hill tonight as the #14 Wildcats faced the rival Saint Joseph’s Hawks. Despite close play through the first half, Villanova showed they are on a completely different level than the Hawks in the second half. The Wildcats ran away with it in the second half in a 98-68 rout.
The two teams traded leads in the first half, as poor shooting from Villanova allowed Saint Joseph’s to keep things close. The Wildcats closed the half on a 16-5 run to take a 39-35 lead into the locker rooms, one they would not relinquish.
Villanova was led in the half by JayVaughn Pinkston who had 12 points and Darrun Hilliard who pitched in 9. The Wildcats were able to grab a lead at the end of the half despite early shooting struggles, as they went just 3-14 (21.4%) from beyond the arc.
Langston Galloway led the hawks through the first half with 12 points and freshman DeAndre Bembry added 9. The Hawks shot at a slightly better clip in the first half, but Villanova’s depth would soon prove to be too much for Saint Joseph’s.
Villanova would come out of the locker room firing on all cylinders, opening the second half on a 20-5 run to blow the game wide open. The Wildcats would remain in control for the rest of the contest, as they coasted to a 98-68 Holy War victory.
JayVaughn Pinkston led the way for the Wildcats, scoring 27 points and grabbing 8 rebounds. James Bell put up an impressive double-double in the contest, as the guard scored 25 points and grabbed 14 rebounds in the game. Darrun Hilliard and Ryan Arcidiacono pitched in 14 and 11 points respectively as well, in a well-rounded effort from Villanova.
Langston Galloway scored 18 and grabbed 7 rebounds in the losing effort for the Hawks, while DeAndre Bembry scored 17. Big men Ronald Roberts, Jr. and Halil Kanacevic put up 12 and 10 points respectively, but a well-balanced Villanova squad proved to be far too much for this Saint Joseph’s squad.
The win moves the fourteenth-ranked Wildcats to 9-0 on the season. They will next face the La Salle Explorers at home on Sunday, December 15.
With the loss, the Hawks fall to 4-4. They will next host the Drexel Dragons at Hagan Arena on Wednesday, December 18.
