The Eagles informed wide receiver DeSean Jackson of his release Friday afternoon. There had been rumors that Jackson would be traded or released for a few weeks now.

"After careful consideration over this offseason, the Philadelphia Eagles have decided to part ways with DeSean Jackson. The team informed him of his release today," the team said in a statement.

The Eagles have signed former Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez to a one-year contract about one week after the Jets signed Michael Vick.

Sanchez was released shortly after the deal between Vick and the Jets was completed. The 27-year-old was in Philadelphia on Thursday for a physical.

The Eagles have announced that wide receiver Jason Avant has been released after eight seasons in Philadelphia.

Since being taken in the fourth round of the 2006 draft by the Eagles, Avant has caught 12 touchdown passed while amassing 3,646 yards on 297 catches.
