Coming off an embarrassing loss to the Cowboys that saw the Eagles score just three points, everyone had hope that the one win Giants would be just the medicine the Birds needed. It would be anything but that, as the offense was downright offensive and the Giants kicked their way to a 15-7 victory at Lincoln Financial Field.
Michael Vick returned as the starter for the Eagles but looked terrible and was clearly still not fully healed from the hamstring injury that kept him out the previous two weeks. Vick was pulled in the second quarter for rookie third-stringer Matt Barkley.
Barkley fumbled his first snap but turned it into a 9-yard pass to Brent Celek. The USC product would then lead the Eagles down the field to the Giants 2 yard line. Then, for some reason unbeknownst to me and the rest of the world, Chip Kelly called a play that involved Barkley on first and goal. Common sense would say you hand the ball to the league's leading running back on that play, but that was not what Chip called and low-and-behold, Barkley fumbled the ball and the Giants recovered.
The Eagles defense was solid yet again, holding the Giants to just 15 points, their fourth straight contest holding opponents to 21 points or less. The Giants couldn't find the end zone all afternoon, but with no offensive threat from the Eagles, they simply kicked field goal after field goal.
The Birds entered the half trailing 12-0, and following a scoreless third quarter by both teams, would fall behind 15-0 in the fourth on John Brown's fifth field goal of the day. The Eagles would recover a botched snap on a Giants punt, as Najee Goode ran the ball two yards for the score.
That would be the only offense the Eagles saw all day (and it came from special teams), as they fell 15-7 to drop to 3-5 on the season. The Eagles will next head to Oakland to face the Raiders, as Barkley will most likely receive the start.
