The Eagles traded defensive tackle Isaac Sopoaga this afternoon to the New England Patriots. The Birds also sent a sixth-round pick in the 2014 draft and in return received a fifth-round pick from the Patriots.
The move dumps the remainder of Sopoaga's salary for the season (about $500,000) off on the Patriots, which is good at least to save the money if not anything else.
Sopoaga, 32, came over from San Francisco in the offseason, as he signed a three-year deal. The nose tackle was nowhere close to living up to his contract, recording only 18 tackles this year. As a result he has been shipped out for essentially nothing, because let's be honest, our sixth-round pick will probably only be a few slots behind the Patriots fifth-round pick that we swapped for.
So there you have it. Aren't you glad the Eagles made such a splash at the trade deadline?
