It was a trap game. We all knew it, whether we wanted to admit it or not. The Eagles traveled to Minnesota this afternoon to take on a struggling Vikings squad that was without All-Pro rusher Adrian Peterson, among others. Against a depleted Vikings squad the Eagles played down to their competition's level, dropping a crucial game 48-30.
The Vikings jumped to a quick lead at home on a 57-yard pass from Matt Cassel to Greg Jennings. The Eagles would be unable to find the end zone in the first half, while the Vikings had their way with the Eagles defense.
The Eagles struggled on offense in the half, but did make it in the end zone on a DeSean Jackson run on 4th and 1. The score would be called back however, as Nick Foles would be called for a low block, leaving the Eagles to settle for a field goal.
With little pressure on him, Cassel was able to go 14 for 20 in the first half for 202 yards, as the Vikings went to the locker room with a 17-9 lead. With all the time in the world to make his throws, Cassel connected with Jennings 7 times in the half for 114 yards, as Minnesota picked apart the Eagles defense.
Minnesota would emerge from the locker room and add 10 points to their lead, stretching it to 27-9 before Philadelphia would make things a bit interesting. Foles would connect with Jackson for a 30-yard touchdown and just three minutes later find Zach Ertz for a 3-yard score. After a failed two-point conversion, Philadelphia trailed just 27-22 and there seemed to be a game again.
The Vikings would squash those thoughts in the fourth quarter however, finding the end zone three times as the Eagles defense continued to struggle on the afternoon. Foles would find Jason Avant for a touchdown and Riley Cooper for the two-point conversion to cut things to 41-30, but Minnesota's third touchdown of the quarter would put things away.
It was a rough afternoon for the Eagles defense, who allowed more than 21 points to an opponent for the first time since a Week 4 stomping by the Broncos. While the offense came to life a bit in the second half, they were unable to make up for the poor play by the defense, as the Eagles dropped the game 48-30.
The loss drops the Eagles to 8-6 on the season and gives the Cowboys an opportunity to move into a tie for first place in the NFC East with a win today. Philadelphia will be back in action next Sunday night against Chicago, before heading to Dallas for the season finale, which could decide their playoff fate.
