Kiko Alonso Injury Update

After injuring his knee in the home opener against Dallas on September 20th, team physicians were unsure of the severity of the injury.  Some officials said that he would be back after a couple of weeks, while others were quick to rule him out for the season.  The Eagles finally learned the fate of their newly acquired linebacker on Wednesday.

After meeting with Dr. James Andrews again, it was determined that the ACL is still intact.  While he will not have to sit out the rest of the season, Kiko Alonso will be slated to return in about a month or so.  This is excellent news, especially after the wave of injuries that hit the Eagles earlier this week.

In the meantime, the Eagles have plenty of options at linebacker, especially with Kendricks returning to practice today after sitting out the Jets game with a hamstring issue.  Kendricks is still questionable for Sunday, but the Eagles can also cycle in DeMeco Ryans and Jordan Hicks, who looked great against the Jets.

Alonso, who missed the 2014 NFL season due to a torn ACL, was traded from the Buffalo Bills to the Eagles during the offseason for Lesean McCoy.  Kelly saw a chance to upgrade the depth at linebacker and pulled the trigger on the trade.  With Alonso, Kendricks, Ryans, and now Hicks at middle linebacker, Chip Kelly has plenty of depth up the middle.

Adding some depth on defense has been a great thing for the Eagles.  After the first three games, the Eagles rank dead last in the NFL in time of possession, averaging about 24 minutes per game on offense.  Some of that is due to the fast paced offense that Kelly runs, but some of it has been due to the poor play from the offense, save the first half against the Jets.

It's great to hear that Alonso will be able to return this season.  While the Eagles haven't looked great so far, the division is wide open, especially with Romo and Dez Bryant out for a while.  All four teams are within a game of each other, with no clear front runner.  It's time that the Eagles start playing to their potential, and continue to get better once Alonso is cleared to play again.
