Donovan McNabb has officially hung up his uniform and called it quits as a Philadelphia Eagle, following the signing of his one-day contract with the team yesterday. I grew up with this man as my quarterback and couldn’t be happier that he chose to retire as an Eagle. He certainly received his fair share of flak from us during his tenure with the team, but I think we can all agree that his time with the Eagles was a fun time for all of us. He may have never won the big one but he captained many deep playoff runs and was the face of the franchise for many years. I think he is easily one of the greatest Eagles of all time and am ecstatic that he came back home to retire.
The Eagles have already announced that they are going to retire his jersey number come September. I had an interesting argument with my coworkers today about whether or not he deserved this honor. You know what? Who deserves this more than McNabb? When he was our leader, I never had any doubts about who was going to be under center every game. I never had to wonder if we were going to be any good when a season was about to start. Can we say the same about the post-McNabb era? I’ll be the first to say I was just about as big a McNabb fan as I was a fan of the Campbell’s soup commercials with Mama McNabb. He deserves this for more than just his impressive stats. He deserves this because when he was on the Eagles, he WAS the Eagles. Go McNabb!
