"After careful consideration over this offseason, the Philadelphia Eagles have decided to part ways with DeSean Jackson. The team informed him of his release today," the team said in a statement.
The Eagles apparently weren't thrilled with Jackson's off the field behavior and he didn't have the greatest relationship with Chip Kelly supposedly.
The final straw appeared to be this afternoon, when Eliot Shorr-Parks of NJ.com released an article saying that the wide receiver had connections to a gang. Believe that if you want. I have no idea what to think at the moment, because this whole situation between the Eagles and Jackson seems odd and a bit shady.
Shortly after the article was posted on NJ.com, the Eagles announced the release of Jackson.
Jackson released his own statement shortly thereafter, thanking the organization, its fans and Andy Reid, while also denying any connections to a gang.
Below is the statement from Jackson, released via Adam Schefter of ESPN.
"First I would like to thank the Eagles organization, the Eagles fans and the city of Philadelphia for my time in Philly. I would also like to thank coach Andy Reid for bringing me in."
"Secondly, I would like to address the misleading and unfounded reports that my release has anything to do with any affiliation that has been speculated surrounding the company I keep off of the field. I would like to make it very clear that I am not and never have been part of any gang. I am not a gang member and to speculate and assume that I am involved in such activity off the field is reckless and irresponsible."
"I work very hard on and off the field and I am a good person with good values. I am proud of the accomplishments that I have made both on and off the field. I have worked tirelessly to give back to my community and have a positive impact on those in need. It is unfortunate that I now have to defend myself and my intentions. These reports are irresponsible and just not true . I look forward to working hard for my new team. God Bless."
The 27-year-old would've made $10.5 million with the Eagles this season. He was coming off a season in which he caught 82 regular season passes for 1,332 yards and 9 touchdowns.
Drafted in the second round of the 2008 draft (49th Overall), Jackson caught 356 passes for 32 touchdowns in his six seasons in Philadelphia.
