The Flyers won a shootout against the best team in the NHL. That's not something we get to say very often, but it happened this afternoon. After giving up a lead twice and failing to score in OT, Wayne Simmonds and Jakub Voracek scored shootout goals and goalie Rob Zepp saved 2 Nashville attempts to move the Flyers within 4 points of the wildcard with a 3-2 victory over former head coach Peter Laviolette.

The Flyers came into tonight's game against Columbus on a 9 game point streak (6-0-3) but could not make it 10 thanks to bad breaks and turnovers. Matt Calvert scored 2 for the Blue Jackets, including the eventual game winner after Vinny Lecavalier turned the puck over on a lazy pass exiting the defensive zone.
Matt Read and Michael Raffl scored for the Flyers tonight as they ended their four game road trip with a victory over the Buffalo Sabres 2-1. The Flyers point streak now stands at 9 games, the team having gone 6-0-3 in that span.
So, this is the post-Steve Mason era. Well, it went better than expected I suppose. Ray Emery was solid all night with 39 saves until giving up the decisive goal with 1:33 left in overtime after the Canadiens took advantage of the Flyers changing lines. Though 1 point isn't as satisfying as 2, the Flyers point streak is still alive at 7 games and the Boston Bruins lost tonight, meaning the orange and black gained a point in the wild card race. And Matt Read scored! That was pretty cool.
![]() Halfway through today's game against the Washington Capitals goalie Steve Mason suffered a non-contact injury that we still don't know much about. It appeared to be a knee or possibly lower back injury, but no information has been divulged by the Flyers yet. What we do know though, is that he won't be traveling with the team Tuesday night to Montreal. Ray Emery will obviously get the lions share of the work, but that leaves the #2 option open. Rob Zepp would be the first goalie called up under normal circumstances, but the 33 year old who won his first NHL game earlier this season was injured over the weekend while playing for the Lehigh Valley Phantoms. His injury is only being called a lower-body injury currently. Gotta love the ambiguity. This leaves the Flyers with one option, the only other goalie they have under contract, 21 year-old Anthony Stolarz. Stolarz has played 22 games with the Phantoms this season and owns a .911 save percentage with a 7-10-1 record. Ron Hextall is brimming with confidence, "Is he ready for this level? Probably not." It remains to be seen how long Steve Mason will be out. Until then Ray Emery will man the helm in the net and we may see Anthony Stolarz make his debut as well. Luckily the schedule gets significantly easier after Montreal, including 4 games against lowly Columbus & Buffalo. It's going to be a pivotal couple of weeks ahead. -Ben Lebo Follow us on Twitter: @BroadStBeat The Flyers gained 2 much needed points in today's matinee game against the Washington Capitals. Jakub Voracek scored to stay in first-place (tied with Kane) in the NHL points race, but Steve Mason was injured in the process.
