The Flyers took a 4-1 lead into the final 10 minutes of the game, but couldn't hold it and allowed the Capitals to force overtime. Alex Ovechkin tied it up with 48 seconds left on a man advantage, which led to a shootout, always a thorn in the side for the Flyers.
The last time these 2 teams played we were treated to the infamous goalie fight, though 'fight' is a lose term as Holtby wanted nothing to do with Emery. Both these goalies were on the bench today, as Steve Mason and rookie Philipp Grubauer got the start. The 7-0 defeat that night was no doubt in the back of the Flyers' minds as well as the fans. They definitely improved by gaining a point, but Tuesday they really need to beat Washington at the Well because they're more than capable of it.
Marcus Johansson scored first for the Capitals, then the goal was awarded to Ovechkin...then back to Johansson. It was a mess, but I think the NHL finally decided on Johansson getting that goal. (Really though it was Timonen that knocked it into our net) Giroux got the Flyers on the board as the first period drew to a close off an assist from rookie Michael Raffl, it was his first of 3 assists today. Raffl has been on a tear lately and is really fitting in nicely with the first line. Likely, he will be sent down to the Phantoms soon because of this.
Raffl assisted on the only second period goal, which belonged to Mark Streit and marked his 300thcareer point.
Sean Couturier and Jakub Voracek scored within a minute of each other in the early minutes of the third, and for that moment in time at least, things were looking good for Philadelphia. About half-way through the third it seemed as though the Flyers lost the ability to work the puck out of their zone.
Mike Green netted the 2nd Caps goal of the game with 8:40 left, Dmitry Orlov the 3rd with 3:31 left, and Alex Ovechkin the 4th with 48 seconds left. It was Ovi's 27th goal of the year. 27! Can you imagine that? Our leading scorers (Lecavalier and Read) haven't even cracked double-digits.
In the shootout, Giroux scored for the Flyers, but it wasn't enough as Eric Fehr and Niklas Backstrom scored for the Capitals to give them the 5-4 OT victory. The Flyers are now 1-3 in shootouts this season, and I get very worried every time the possibility for one presents itself. I don't necessarily think the shootout is a horrible idea, as most writers seem to, I just wish the Flyers were better at them. A lot better.
We won't have to wait long for a rematch at least. The Capitals come to Philly on Tuesday. Puck drop is at 7.
