The Flyers won a shootout against the best team in the NHL. That's not something we get to say very often, but it happened this afternoon. After giving up a lead twice and failing to score in OT, Wayne Simmonds and Jakub Voracek scored shootout goals and goalie Rob Zepp saved 2 Nashville attempts to move the Flyers within 4 points of the wildcard with a 3-2 victory over former head coach Peter Laviolette.
Wayne Simmonds redirected a Michael Del Zotto shot past Nashville goalie Pekka Rinne 9 minutes into the game. The Predators only had three shots on goal in the first period, but were efficient, scoring on one of them thanks to Colin Wilson.
Ryan White now has the longest point streak of his career, 4 games, after scoring during a tie-up in front of the net in the second period.
Rob Zepp only faced 7 shots in the first 2 periods. When Craig Smith scored to tie it at 2-2 only 18 seconds into the third period it may have been because Zepp had not yet developed any rhythm. He held strong the rest of the game though to bring it to overtime.
In the shootout Zepp saved shots from Craig Smith and Matt Cullen. Voracek scored off a backhander and Simmond snuck one through Rinne's five hole to give the Flyers the win.
Simmonds and Voracek switched lines today, Voracek now on the second and Simmonds on the top line, but it seems like its paying off.
The Flyers have another matinee tomorrow against the Washington Capitals. 12:30pm at the Wells Fargo Center.
