So, this is the post-Steve Mason era. Well, it went better than expected I suppose. Ray Emery was solid all night with 39 saves until giving up the decisive goal with 1:33 left in overtime after the Canadiens took advantage of the Flyers changing lines. Though 1 point isn't as satisfying as 2, the Flyers point streak is still alive at 7 games and the Boston Bruins lost tonight, meaning the orange and black gained a point in the wild card race. And Matt Read scored! That was pretty cool.
Matt Read scored his first goal in 25 games only 51 seconds into the first period with a wristshot from the left circle. It's good to know he's still capable of scoring, this was only his 4th goal of the season.
Ray Emery did great, saving 39 shots and holding down a shutout for the first two and a half periods. That ended though with 7:22 left in the game when Tomas Plekanec slipped one past Emery during a tie-up in front of the net.
Montreal was driving hard in the final period, outshooting the Flyers 12-4. It didn't help that they had to kill 2 penalties as well, but the defense held the Canadiens off long enough to get the game to overtime.
David Desharnais won it for the Canadiens in overtime by shooting in his own rebound. The Flyers got caught changing lines to lead to the final goal. The puck was passed to Vinny Lecavalier, but he was in the middle of a line change and it just sat awkwardly by his feet before being picked up by Montreal's Andrei Markov who fed Desharnais across center ice.
The Flyers are now 5-0-2 in their last seven games and head to Columbus to continue the road trip on Friday.
Some news on Steve Mason came out today via the Flyers Twitter. It looks like Mase will be out 2-3 weeks.
