In traditional Flyers fashion, they faced off tonight against a team that was much better than them and won. That team tonight was the Chicago Blackhawks, the 4th best team in the Western Conference, who fell to the Flyers 4-1. Imagine what the Flyers record would look like right now if they could only play top-tier teams every game.
It was nice to see beloved former Flyer Kimmo Timonen get a standing ovation and a highlight video in the first period in what is most likely his last ever game at the Wells Fargo Center, and first since being traded to Chicago at the trade deadline.
Wayne Simmonds scored his 100th career goal as a member of the Flyers in the first period to put the Flyers up 1-0.
Ryan White scored his 5th goal of the year in the second. White is playing on a one year contract and clearly is still trying to leave a favorable impression to get a new deal. Would not be the least bit surprised to see him back in orange and black next year, hopefully not for Andrew MacDonald money though.
Giroux's goal with six minutes left in the second put the Flyers up 3-0, but of even more note, it was Giroux's first even strength goal at home this season, his 22nd of the year. The goal came on a deflection from a Voracek shot, which gave Jake his 53rd assist of the season and keeps him in the hunt for the scoring title.
Andrew Shaw scored the Blackhawks' only goal of the night on a power play caused by a high sticking call on Carlo Colaiacovo that Daniel Carcillo embellished. Speaking of Carcillo, he picked a fight with Pierre Edouard Bellemare, but couldn't hold his own. The Frenchman easily won that fight at the end despite taking a few shots in the beginning.
Michael Raffl scored a power play goal on the rush to put things away and lead the Flyers to a 4-1 victory. Steve Mason saved 34 of 35 shots to give the Flyers the edge.
The Flyers play five of their last seven games this season at home, the first one coming Saturday night against the San Jose Sharks.
