Going into this game, I think most Flyer fans knew it had the potential to get really ugly. Truth be told, the score doesn't reflect the game completely. It was not a drubbing, the Flyers were never really out of it, but just watching this team you knew there was no way they were winning it. You'd figure the effort would be a little stronger against the Penguins of all teams, but the 2013 Flyers look like they're skating in sand.
You know it's bad when the Penguins goals don't even enrage you anymore, you just kind of sit there and accept it. That's the kind of energy this team is bringing though right now. How is it that our young prospects who were supposed to develop this off season (Giroux, Voracek, Couturier, etc.) look like they've regressed? If I was Homer, I'd be very nervous now.
Jussi Jokinen notched the first goal for Pittsburgh halfway into the 2nd when the Flyers could not clear the puck from their zone even though they had a good 2 or 3 chances. A few minutes later, Chris Kunitz made it 2-0 on a rebound shot. The Flyers were outshot 17-5 in the 2nd period, but there was a glimmer of hope. Wayne Simmonds notched his first goal this season (tying him for 2nd in scoring on the team) on a powerplay with 1.7 seconds left. The McDonald's power play jackpot was mercifully stopped from hitting $500.
None of that momentum carried into the third though, as the Flyers looked lifeless and gave up a goal each to Crosby and Malkin. To make matters worse, Timonen did not play in the 3rd period due to a lower body injury.
The Flyers have yet to score 3 goals this year. The beauty is though, I know we as fans will still support them. Even though the team is 1-7 I still look forward to their next game, against the Rangers. It's an addiction I suppose.
