Steve Mason had an outstanding night, saving 37 of 39 shots for the orange and black, but it wasn't enough to win tonight's contest against the Dallas Stars. Luke Schenn scored 1:13 into the game, but after that the Flyers offense went anemic. Ottawa has now crept ahead of the Flyers in the wildcard race and Boston's victory puts them 9 points ahead of Philadelphia, who could have narrowed the gap to 2 points had they beat them on Saturday. The Flyers have not been able to right the ship since, dropping 3 straight games.
Steve Mason put things pretty frankly in his post game interview, "There's no desperation...We needed to have a much better effort and it wasn't there. I'm embarrassed and hope everybody else is embarrassed."
It's hard to argue with Mason at this point, who has been turning in consistently good performances and getting consistently little offensive support.
Luke Schenn, of all people, beat Dallas goalie Kari Lehtonen early in the game from the top of the zone to give the Flyers the 1-0 lead on his third goal of the year. No one was able to build off that momentum though. The second and third period saw the Flyers get outshot 30-12.
Brett Ritchie scored 11 minutes into the first for the Stars and Vernon Fiddler redirected the game winner past Mase with 6 minutes left to give Dallas the win, only their second ever in the Wells Fargo Center.
The Flyers take on the Blues in St. Louis on Thursday, a team they beat last week 3-1. They'll need to have a near perfect season the rest of the way if they have any chance of making the playoffs.
