Flyers Offense Runs Wild in Minnesota

12/23/2014

Fresh off what I would say was one of the best Flyers games I've seen all year, the Flyers travelled down to St. Paul to take on the Minnesota Wild after coming from behind to beat Winnipeg on Sunday. Ray Emery took over the net minding duties and didn't miss a beat, while the Flyers offense accumulated goals from all four lines to defeat the Wild 5-2 and move back to .500 on the season. (14-14-6)
The Flyers stormed out of the gates tonight. Minnesota did not register their first shot on goal until there was 10:06 left in the first period. By that point, Claude Giroux and Sean Couturier had already put the orange and black up 2-0.

Minnesota quickly made it 2-1 though on their second shot of the game as Marco Scandella rocketed a slap shot past Emery from the top of the zone. The Wild controlled the pace for the rest of the first, but the Flyers were able to keep it at 2-1 going into the first break.

In the second period the Flyers were able to kill 2 of the 3 Minnesota power plays, but Charlie Coyle was able to sneak one past Emery to make it 2-2. Wayne Simmonds would come to the rescue though with his team-leading 15th goal of the year to put the good guys back up 3-2. Simmonds was able to somehow sneak out of a scrum of Wild defenders near the boards and find Brayden Schenn's pass to flip past Darcy Kuemper, who started in net in place of a sick Niklas Backstrom.

Early in the third, Zach Parise seemed to tie the game up, but upon closer inspection the puck actually went in under the side of the net while Jason Pominville had the net off its moorings ever so slightly. This was obvious on the replay and the goal was quickly waved off.

Soon thereafter Vinny Lecavalier tipped in Andrew MacDonald's shot to make it 4-2. Vinny seems to have gotten back in stride, scoring his third goal in 2 games, 5th on the year.

The last few minutes saw Pierre Edouard-Bellemare miss an empty netter, despite shooting from the offensive zone (face palm). Michael Raffl was able to connect though to bring the final score to 5-2.

No grievances with the Flyers these days, who are now 6-1-3 in their last 10 games.

Ray Emery saved 22 of 24 tonight for his third straight win.

The Flyers went 4 for 5 on the penalty kill and only received one power play, which they failed to convert.

The Christmas break is up next. No teams will be practicing from the 24th through the 26th. The Flyers will pick back up on their 8-game road trip in Nashville on the 27th where they'll square off against former coach Peter Laviolette.
