The Flyers have long been searching for a great puck-moving defenseman. Shayne Gostisbehere, their third round draft pick in 2012, looks to be the answer. He proved it yesterday, leading his Union College team to their first national title in hockey, defeating Minnesota 7-4 in Philadelphia. In that victory, Gostisbehere (can I just call him Shayne?) registered 1 goal, 2 assists and a +7 on the box score. Let me repeat, +7! If that doesn't show you who was controlling the pace of the game on the ice I don't know what will.
More impressive than his stats might be the fact that Shayne is from Florida. As of now, Gostisbehere has yet to announce whether he will return to Union or not. I for one am hoping he decides to make the jump to the NHL. I don't think he'd have to do much time with the Phantoms before becoming a roster mainstay. The only negatives I've been hearing is that he needs to put on a bit more size, but that will come.
Minnesota coach Don Lucia said it best, "He's a special player, and he kind of controlled the game back there. In my opinion, he was the best player on the ice tonight."
Gostisbehere has accomplished pretty much everything at Union so far. Hopefully he was getting some love from the fans in Philaldelphia last night to sway his decision to come up. Whether it happens this year or not though, we will certainly be seeing more from this kid in the future.
