Flyers Return to Action With Shootout Win Courtesy of Simmonds

Wayne Simmonds scored the Flyers first goal of the night during a first period power play and bookended his effort with the deciding (and only) goal in the shootout to give Philadelphia a 4-3 win over Arizona. This marks the Flyers second shootout win this season in 7 tries and earned them the extra point, which is much needed if the Flyers have any hope of going on a run to get into the playoffs.
Ray Emery started the game in net, but was quickly pulled after giving up 2 goals on 4 shots in the first 6 minutes. Connor Murphy and Martin Erat scored those goals. Steve Mason saved 22 of the 23 shots he faced in relief of Emery to help keep the score manageable for the Flyers.

R.J. Umberger tied the game at 2-2 in the second period after beating Arizona goalie and possible witness protection participant Mike Smith over his top right shoulder from the side of the net.

Michael Del Zotto scored his fourth goal of the season with 1 minute left in the second banking it off the side post and the cross bar. Thae 3-2 lead was short lived though as 23 seconds later Tobias Rieder would level things again by chipping a pass from Shane Doan over Mason's shoulder.

After Giroux and Voracek came up blank in their shootout attempts Wayne Simmonds stepped in and beat Mike Smith for the win.

Although he didn't post a stat line, it's worth noting that Petr Straka was called up from Lehigh Valley and made his NHL debut tonight while Michael Raffl sat out with an illness.

The Flyers stay in Philly to take on the Winnipeg Jets Thursday night at 7.

Ben- would you kindly expand upon the Mike Smith/ witness protection program theory. I'm missing something & am too lazy to try and figure it out on my own. Pls & thx.
