Before our beloved Flyers take the ice in 4 days for the first time this season, let's take a look at some of the more prevalent rule changes the NHL approved during the off season. Though they aren't overwhelming rule changes, the game will no doubt be affected by them.
Rule 1.8 - Bohemian Trap-city (Bigger Trapezoid)
In an unfortunate bit of irony for Marty Brodeur, as soon as he is out of an NHL job they expand the trapezoid behind the net. This season the trapezoid will be extended by two feet on either side, giving the goaltenders more room to play the puck. The trapezoid was first implemented after the 2004-05 lockout to stop goalies from acting as a third defenseman on dump-ins. Since the goalie can only play the puck behind the net in the trapezoid they can't steal pucks from the corners on dump-ins. This move benefits the puck-handling goaltenders like Brodeur, but really all goaltenders.

Rule 24 - Spin Class is over
Though we hardly ever see this move in shootouts, the NHL has outlawed the 'spin-o-rama' move. No longer will players be allowed to do 360 spin moves before shooting. The goalies complained it made them lose track of the pucks. Well...there goes at least half of every hockey highlight that ESPN will ever show.
Rule 64 - Diving/Embellishment (The Pittsburgh rule)
This hockey, not the British Premier League, and there's no room for embellishing and diving to try to draw calls from the refs. Sidney Crosby and the boys won't be happy about this, but it needed to happen. Below are the new punishments, per offense, for diving.
1 - Warning
2 - $2,000 fine for player
3 - $3,000 fine for player
4 - $4,000 fine for player. $2,000 fine for coach
5 - $5,000 fine for player. $3,000 fine for coach
6 - $5,000 fine for player. $4,000 fine for coach
7 - $5,000 fine for player. $5,000 fine for coach
8 - $5,000 fine for player. $5,000 fine for coach
Rule 76 Face-offs
In an effort to delay face-offs after icing penalties, in which the same defensive players have to remain on the ice, many players would commit infractions and then be forced to switch out with another player, who would take his sweet old time getting to the face-off dot. No more is this the case, if the man taking the face-off commits an infraction he must stay and take the face-off, no switch. If a second violation occurs on the same face-off it will be a two-minute minor penalty.
Rule 84 - Overtime
As opposed to before, teams will switch ends of the ice before overtime begins. The ice will also receive a dry scape from the zamboni and the head coach will no longer have to submit a list of 3 players before shootouts begin.
