A loss would put the Flyers 5 points behind the Rangers and out of third place in the division. A win though, would only put them 1 point behind New York. The Flyers defense stepped up and helped earn a victory today 4-2 over the Rangers.
Vinny Lecavalier was credited with the game's first goal, but to be honest it was own goal at the hand of a Ranger player's stick. It looked as though Brayden Schenn touched it last and many thought he would be credited with the goal. Ultimately it went to Vinny though, and he kind of needs it given his recent offensive slump, so good for him.
The second goal of the period, by Sean Couturier, now a beard with a hockey player growing on it, was a thing of beauty. He broke away from 2 defenders, deked the puck to the left of Lundqvist and was patient enough to fire it over the Ranger goalie once he was already down on the ice. Sidenote: Matt Read's assist on the play was his 100th NHL point.
The Rangers really controlled the pace of the game throughout the second. Chris Kreider scored 5 minutes in and Derick Brassard added a power play goal 11 minutes in to tie it at 2-2. Wayne Simmonds was quick to respond though. After having his pass blocked on a power play he regained possession and proceeded to turn around and rip one passed Lundqvist to take the lead back. The Flyers went into the second break up 3-2.
The Flyers picked it up in the third, realizing maybe a win would be good to have. They doubled their shots from the 2nd period and Luke Schenn was standing in the right place at the right time with 3:45 left to fire home a rebound before Lundqvist could react. The game would end 4-2 in favor of Philadelphia
It's good to know that this team can pick themselves up after rough losses. They are now 4-0-1 in games after getting trounced by 4 or more goals the previous game.
The Flyers can leapfrog the Rangers tomorrow in the playoff standings with a win in Washington. The game starts bright and early at 12:30 pm.
