76ers Drop One vs. Davis, Pelicans

The last game the Sixers won was earlier this month: January 19th in the Wells Fargo Center against the Pelicans without an injured Anthony Davis. On Monday, the second game in the season series between Philly and New Orleans would turn out quite differently.

With Michael Carter-Williams out with an illness and Davis back in the Pelicans lineup, the 76ers (8-37) did not stand a chance in New Orleans (24-21). Final score: 99-74.
With MCW out, Brett Brown moved Larry Drew II into the starting point guard spot while also shifting Henry Sims into the starting line-up and changing KJ McDaniels into a reserve role where he has flourished.

The Sixers kept it close until midway through the opening quarter when Anthony Davis' 13 first quarter points helped New Orleans pull away. Philadelphia entered the 2nd quarter down 30-19, but McDaniels and Covington put together a 14-3 run to pull within 1 with just over 8 minutes remaining in the first half. But New Orleans would score 7 unanswered in a just over a minute expanding their lead. The 76ers entered the break down 52-43.

Davis would have another dominant performance in the 3rd quarter and the Sixers couldn't keep the same scoring pace. A jumper from former Villanova Wildcat, Dante Cunningham, put the 76ers in a 20 point hole with 2:27 left in the 3rd. Philly was outscored 33-19 in the period. Both teams' offenses struggled in the final quarter and the Sixers were unable to come back from the deficit.

The Sixers only shot 35% from the floor and only connected on 2 of their 15 three-point attempts. Although they limited themselves to 12 turnovers, Philly was destroyed on the boards, out-rebounded 52-38 and allowing 17 offensive rebounds.

KJ led the 76ers with 16 points and also added 3 steals and 2 blocks. Nerlens Noel was held ineffective with 2 points (1-9 FG), but grabbed 6 rebounds and turned away 2 shots. Both Mbah a Moute and Sims scored 14. Jerami Grant had 10 points, including a highlight reverse dunk while rejecting 4 shots.

Anthony Davis finished with 32 points, 10 rebounds (5 offensive), 3 steals and 4 blocks of his own. Ryan Anderson added 19 points and 7 boards off the bench. Eric Gordon contributed 13 points and Tyreke Evans dished out a game-high 12 assists.

The Sixers will host the Pistons on Wednesday.
