![]() Defense was a major point of weakness for Temple last season, when the Owls allowed 78.1 points per game. Oh what a difference a year can make. The Owls entered Saturday’s contest allowing just 62.1 points per game, and they would put that vastly improved defense on display against Tulane. Temple would hold the Green Wave to just eight first half points, the lowest amount ever scored in a half at the Liacouras Center, on their way to a 55-37 win. After going into the locker room down 41-28 at halftime, Saint Joseph's came out like a bat out of hell and went on a 20-3 run to start the second half, en route to the 75-70 win. Aaron Brown had a career high 20 points, while DeAndre Bembry led the Hawks with 21 points. Peyton Aldridge led all scorers with 24 points.
The wait is over. Almost.
Friday night the Sixers Twitter account (which is one of the best accounts in the game in case you aren’t already following) teased a new mascot for the franchise (see below). The mascot is set to debut on February 10 at the Franklin Institute. Tonight marked the Ivy League home opener for the Penn Quakers, who dropped their first division contest to Princeton 3 weeks ago. The Quakers were riding some momentum after defeating Big 5 rival Saint Joseph's last week and earning a moral victory for pushing Villanova to the edge 2 weeks ago. Dartmouth also had some momentum, having just beat the defending Ivy League champion and preseason favorite Harvard.
After a slow start to the game by both teams, the Penn offense took over in the second half led by Matt Howard's 18 points, a season and career high for the sophomore. Tony Hicks and Greg Louis chipped in with 11 and 10 points respectively as the Quakers held on for closely contested 58-51 win. The Timberwolves arrived at the Wells Fargo Center for a battle between two teams vying for the 1st overall pick in next years draft. Friday's matchup marked the second meeting of these team, as the Sixers overcame Wolves in Minnesota for their first win of the season in December.
Carter-Williams looked dominant as both he and Nerlens Noel led the 76ers to their 10th win of the season. MCW impressively recorded his 5th triple-double in less than 2 full seasons played. Philadelphia's offense looked controlled and fluid, finally able to break the 100 point mark after 24 games, winning 103-94. There are finally signs of life on Broad Street! The Flyers brought the intensity at home tonight against the Winnipeg Jets and received some contributions from unlikely sources to win their third straight game. Defenseman Nick Schultz notched his first goal of the season, and first in 126 games, with assists from Petr Straka (first NHL point) and Ryan White (first Philadelphia Flyer point). Chris Vande Velde, Wayne Simmonds, Brayden Schenn & Sean Couturier also scored as the Flyers rolled to a decisive 5-2 victory.
The 76ers snapped their 6 game losing skid with a decisive victory over the Pistons on Wednesday. A combination of good defense from Brett Brown's squad and frigid shooting from Detroit helped put the Sixers maintain their lead after a great first quarter.
Michael Carter-Williams led the way after missing the last game against New Orleans as the Sixers won 89-69. It marked the 4th home win for Philly this season. ![]() Will Cummings continued to prove he is the driving force behind Temple's success on Wednesday night. The senior point guard had missed time recently due to a leg injury, as the Owls found themselves in the midst of a three-game losing streak. Since Cummings' return to the lineup last week, however, Temple looks much more like the squad that strung together six straight wins, including victories over #10 Kansas and defending national champion UConn. Cummings, a Jacksonville, FL native, would put up 14 points during Temple's trip to his home state on Wednesday, as the Owls dominated UCF, 86-62. |
