Temple traveled to Tampa on Sunday to take on South Florida, as the Owls looked to get back on track following a disappointing loss to East Carolina on Wednesday.

Senior Quenton DeCosey tallied a career-high 30 points to help the Owls do just that, as Temple held on for a 70-63 win over the Bulls.

DeCosey was hot from the outset, scoring 20 points in the first half to help Temple head to the break with a 35-31 lead.

Temple grew its lead to as much as 15 just less than seven minutes into the second half, but USF would refuse to go away, ratting off a 10-2 run to cut the Owls’ lead to single digits.

Saturday evening’s contest between Saint Joseph’s and Rhode Island was far from pretty.

The shooting was ugly. There were chippy plays, including two Flagrant 1 fouls called against Saint Joseph’s. And, of course, Rhode Island Coach Dan Hurley was called for a technical foul for his typical antics.

In the end, Saint Joseph’s picked up a 64-55 win over Rhode Island in a tough road contest, the Hawks’ seventh straight win and 14th in their last 15 games.

The Saint Joseph’s Hawks continued their hot start on Wednesday night.

Entering their contest with UMass, the Hawks had won five in a row and 12 of their last 13 games and had shown few signs of slowing down.

Against the Minutemen, Saint Joseph’s would overcome early shooting struggles and a one-point halftime deficit on its way to a 78-70 win to improve to 17-3 overall and 6-1 in Atlantic 10 play.

While the end result was one the Hawks were content with, the game was not without its hiccups.

“We left a lot of plays out there and we will have to be better across the board,” Saint Joseph’s Coach Phil Martelli said.

24 hours after they were originally scheduled to meet, Temple and eighth-ranked SMU took the court at the Liacouras Center Sunday afternoon in front of a small audience that braved the snow to take in the game.

Those who showed up were treated to a special performance.

While the Mustangs entered the day a perfect 18-0, Devin Coleman’s shooting would be the only thing flawless when time expired. The senior scored a career-high 23 points on a perfect 8-for-8 shooting performance, including seven three-pointers, to help the Owls pick up an 89-80 win.

“It was spectacular,” Temple Coach Fran Dunphy said of Coleman’s performance. “There was nothing cheap about any of the balls that went in the basket. They were dead in the hoop, each one of them, including the bank early in the second half, which helped us. He was great. If you’re going to win a game like this against this good of a basketball team and program, you’re going to have to get special performances and certainly his was special.”

Temple Survives Double-OT Against Cincinnati

In an up-and-down season, the Temple Owls entered the Liacouras Center on Saturday looking to build some momentum once and for all.

Having not won more than two games in a row and coming off a two-point loss to Memphis, the Owls were looking to beat Cincinnati for the second time this season and get back on the winning track.

While the Owls would do just that, it would not be the prettiest of efforts. Temple would pick up its ninth win of the season with the help of a put-back by Jaylen Bond with 16 seconds remaining in the second overtime period surviving a scare from the Bearcats.

“He was great,” Temple Coach Fran Dunphy said of Bond. “He had a couple of great stick-backs for us, but that’s what he does. He’s a defender, rebounder.”

Saint Joseph’s Bounces Back With Win Over Rhode Island

After suffering a disappointing 85-82 loss to VCU on Tuesday – one in which Saint Joseph’s squandered a 13-point second half lead – the Hawks looked to get back on track Sunday against Rhode Island.

Free throws haunted Saint Joseph’s in its loss to VCU, and at points during Sunday’s contest, it seemed poor free throw shooting would bite the Hawks yet again.

The Hawks would take care of business from the foul line in the final 1:43 of play, however, making 7-of-8 attempts from the line to hold off Rhode Island for a 72-67 win.

“We didn’t want to lose two in a row,” DeAndre’ Bembry said. “We just wanted to come in and play our game, and if we play our game, we’ve been winning this year. So, that’s what we tried to do, just get back to our game. Last game was a rough one for us at the end, and we just tried to stick to our game.

It was the tale of two halves Saturday night at the Liacouras Center.

After falling behind by as much as 11 in the first half against East Carolina, Temple would find itself heading to the locker room down just 38-33 thanks to two clutch threes by Devin Coleman to end the half, including one at the buzzer.

In the second half, the Owls would look like a completely different team, knocking down eight three-pointers on their way to blowing the game open and picking up a 78-60 win over the Pirates.

Saint Joseph’s Falters Late in Loss to VCU

Saint Joseph’s entered Hagan Arena on Tuesday night looking for its eighth consecutive win, a feat the Hawks had not accomplished since 2006.

At times, the Hawks seemed destined to pick up that eighth straight win, but in the end, an old nemesis from a season ago, free throws, would rear their ugly head.

Saint Joseph’s would miss 10 second half foul shots as it saw a 13 point second half lead slip away in an 85-82 loss to VCU, snapping the Hawks seven-game win streak.

“For most of the second half, we played reasonably well,” Saint Joseph’s Coach Phil Martelli said. “But when the clock is stopped and you walk to the foul line and the ball doesn’t go in, it’s a setback. You have to win a home game that you’re up 13.”

Coming off a road win over #22 Cincinnati, there were hopes that Temple had found their groove heading into the new year.

Instead, the Owls stumbled into 2016.

Behind sloppy performances on both ends of the court on Saturday, Temple would suffer a 77-50 loss to Houston to fall to 6-6 on the season and make the Cincinnati win seem like the distant past.

“We beat a great team in Cincinnati away and to come back home and lose a game like this is really tough,” Quenton DeCosey said.
