The Phillies continued to look to the future Sunday afternoon in their series finale with the Padres.

In a season that has been all but over since May, the organization has called up quite a few of its top prospects. On Sunday afternoon, one more of those prospects would make his Major League debut, as Alec Asher was tapped for the start.

Asher, who was acquired in a July trade that sent Cole Hamels to the Rangers, would last 5 2/3 innings, allowing 4 runs and picking up the loss, as the Phillies fell 9-4.

Mychal Kendricks Inked To Four Year Extension

8/24/2015

With the Eagles' linebacking group getting crowded, there was speculation that Mychal Kendricks would be the odd man out, either leaving through trade or free agency.  That was put to rest earlier today, when the Eagles signed Kendricks to a four year extension worth $29 million, $16 million guaranteed.  With a few contract incentives, the deal could reach $31 million.

The Phillies' youngsters continued to impress on Sunday.

Just a day after a pair of clutch late-inning home runs by rookies Darnell Sweeney and Aaron Altherr lifted the Phillies past the Marlins, Aaron Nola would toss eight shutout innings to propel the Phillies to a 2-0 win to take the series 3-1 over Miami.

Takeaways From Preseason Week 2

I guess you can say that the Ravens needed (Balti)more points if they wanted to win tonight.  Had that one saved up for a few weeks now.  But really, the only thing more laughable than my attempt at humor was the Ravens starters.  The Eagles came, they saw, and they conquered.  The defense was a well-oiled machine, the offense was an even more well-oiled machine, and the special teams was a machine that was, you guessed it, well-oiled.

The end of an era.

On Wednesday night, the Phillies traded veteran second baseman Chase Utley and cash considerations to the Dodgers in exchange for infielder/outfielder Darnell Sweeney and right-handed pitcher John Richy.

A cornerstone in one of the best eras in Phillies history, Utley will now reunite with longtime double-play partner Jimmy Rollins on the Dodgers.

Sixers Offseason Update: What The Heck Is Going On?

The space in between summer leagues and preseason is a dead time. Imagine the folk singer in Frank's bar during the second season of True Detective playing a slow brooding song to no one other than that one passed out, possibly dead, guy on the barstool (is that Stan??? STAN!!!).

If you haven't seen the second season of True Detective (I envy you), just imagine tumbleweed, or quietly waiting, staring at the corner of the room where two walls meet while on timeout as a kid.  A long stretch where time mostly sits still and it's almost always painfully dull. It's no man's land is what I'm getting at.

And a lot of nothing has happened since the Sixers signed Richaun Holmes, a whoooole lot of nothing. I am now going to comment on some aspects of the nothingness.

The Phillies announced Tuesday that rookie third baseman Maikel Franco has been placed on the 15-day DL with a small fracture in his left wrist, an injury that General Manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said could put Franco out for the year.

In a corresponding move, the club called up outfielder Aaron Altherr from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Franco was injured last Tuesday when he was hit by a Jeremy Hellickson pitch in a game against the Diamondbacks. Initial X-rays that night were negative, but Franco showed no improvement after a few days and was sent for an MRI this week, which revealed the small fracture.

Can you smell it? No, not that.  The other smell in the air.  I'm talking about Eagles football baby! It's finally back, after an eight month hiatus.  Yeah it's just the preseason, but it's prime Tebowmania time.  As much as we love watching the Phillies do baseball (well, trying to do baseball), football is king in this country, especially in Philadelphia.

A lot has happened since week 17 back in December, but you already know the details leading up to today.  If not, please browse our Eagles section and read up on our stories/click on as many ads as you can so we can eat this week.  Instead of our usual game recap, I will just list a few things to takeaway from today's action.

Phillies third baseman Maikel Franco was lifted from Tuesday night’s game against the Arizona Diamondbacks in the first inning after being hit in the left wrist by a pitch.

X-rays on the wrist were negative per The Philadelphia Daily News’ Ryan Lawrence, who also tweeted that Franco was diagnosed with a left wrist contusion.

Franco almost immediately dropped to the ground behind home pate after being hit by Jeremy Hellickson’s 90 MPH fastball, and looked to be in severe pain. The rookie was quickly attended to by a trainer and removed from the game.
