One year ago, it took Saint Joseph’s until February to pick up their 10th win. The Hawks would go on to win just 13 games in a very forgettable 2014-2015 campaign.

Oh what a difference a year can make.

On Tuesday night, Saint Joseph’s faced off with the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) and came away with a 78-68 win to improve to 10-2 on the season. It was a welcome send off to 2015, as Saint Joseph’s played its final game before the New Year and before conference play begins.

“The experience is in the 12 games,” Saint Joseph’s Coach Martelli said. “What did we find out? We found out, certainly, that we have two high double-digit scorers. We found out that James (Demery) can come off the bench and impact the game.”

Quenton DeCosey notched a double-double with 20 points and 12 rebounds on Saturday to boost Temple to a 78-63 win over Delaware State to even the Owls' record at 5-5 on the season.

The Owls would start off poorly in this one, finding themselves trailing the Hornets by seven just more than five minutes into the game. Temple would begin to settle in a bit from there, however, using a 10-2 run to take a 13-12 lead.

Delaware State would regain the lead at 24-23, but Temple would close the half strong to head to the locker room with a 35-27 lead.

DeAndre' Bembry and Isaiah Miles scored 16 points apiece to lead five double-digit scorers for Saint Joseph's on Saturday, as the Hawks defeated Illinois State 79-65 to pick up their fourth straight win and improve to 8-2 on the season.

The Hawks would start off strong, taking an 18-7 lead behind six early points by Miles, but the Redbirds would respond with a 15-3 run to take a 22-21 lead.

It would be the Redbirds' only lead of the game, however, as Saint Joseph's recovered with a 24-4 run of their own over the final eight minutes of the half to head to the locker room with a 45-26 advantage.

Saint Joseph’s Wins Overtime Thriller Against Temple

Smash mouth basketball is nothing new in the Big 5. For 60 years, the five teams have been meeting annually as part of Big 5 competition, but the rivalries themselves run much longer.

On Sunday, Temple and Saint Joseph’s would renew their rivalry, meeting for the 158th time.
The two teams would not disappoint.

After 40 minutes of play, the Owls and Hawks would find themselves knotted at 61-61 and need overtime to decide a winner.

Temple would grab an early three-point lead in the extra period, but Saint Joseph’s would respond. With 2:13 remaining in overtime, freshman guard Lamarr Kimble would show the poise of a seasoned veteran in draining a crucial three-pointer to put the Hawks up 66-64, and Saint Joseph’s would hang on from there for a 66-65 victory.

“He’s played in bigger games than this, so he’s never really scared of the moment,” Saint Joseph’s star DeAndre’ Bembry said of Kimble. “I remember watching him for the first time when he played in the (high school) states in our gym and he made a real clutch three, I think with five or 10 seconds left. So that’s just something that reminds me of why he hit the shot today. He’s very confident in himself and that’s what we need from our team.”

Temple Hangs On Against Penn in Big 5 Battle

12/9/2015

Big 5 matches have a reputation for being dogfights.

Wednesday night’s matchup between Temple and Penn at the Palestra would fit right into that reputation.

Despite the Owls building a lead as large as 12, the Quakers would refuse to stay down, making it a one-possession game in the final 30 seconds of play. The two teams would trade blows over the final 30 seconds of play, with Temple hanging on for a 77-73 win, but not without a fight from Penn.

“They’re a great team and like all Big 5 games it was a tough matchup for us,” said Temple senior Jaylen Bond. “So you knew they weren’t going to go away and we had to be smart and stay within the team concept to come out with a win.”

DeAndre’ Bembry Carries Saint Joseph’s Past Princeton

One year ago, the Saint Joseph’s Hawks had one option to win: get DeAndre’ Bembry the ball. This year has been a stark contrast, with multiple players stepping up to contribute.

Bembry likes it that way. But that doesn’t mean he isn’t still able to take over when needed.

With the majority of its players struggling on Tuesday night against Princeton, Saint Joseph’s was forced to resort to last year’s tactics, relying on Bembry to step up with a dominant performance.

He would do just that, scoring a season-high 27 points to go along with 10 rebounds, four steals and three assists to guide the Hawks to a 62-50 win over the Tigers.

“I had to do that almost every game last year, so it’s not really anything new to me or anything I’m uncomfortable with,” Bembry said of taking command. “I’m comfortable taking as many shots as I need to.”
