Asche's Career Night Not Enough, as Phillies Fall to Blue Jays in Extras

Cody Asche took one giant step toward silencing some critics on Tuesday night. After a slow start to the season, Asche erupted with a 4-for-4 night at the plate, including a grand slam.

It still wasn't enough for a Phillies win.

After Asche's grand slam in the sixth, the Phillies and Blue Jays remained knotted at 5-5 until the 10th inning, when the Blue Jays took a 6-5 lead on their way to picking up the win.

Cole Hamels made the start for the Phillies, and continued to struggle since returning from the disabled list. Hamels was tagged for five runs in six innings of work on the night, as he surrendered 10 hits, including two home runs.

After Hamels left the Phillies in a massive hole, this game seemed all but over.

Then, the offense awoke in the bottom of the sixth. Carlos Ruiz doubled to start off the inning and eventually came around to score on a single by Ryan Howard.

With the bases loaded and two outs, Asche stepped to the plate. Asche would connect with the second pitch of the at-bat, driving the ball deep to right for a game-tying grand slam.

The Phillies shaky bullpen would hold up until the 10th, when Antonio Bastardo surrendered consecutive singles to start the frame. The Blue Jays would eventually bring home the go-ahead run on a Juan Francisco sacrifice fly, as they went on to top the Phillies, 6-5.

The Phillies will now head to Toronto for the second half of this home-and-home series with the Blue Jays. Cliff Lee will make the start, as he faces off against Mark Buehrle.
