Asher Picks Up Loss in Phillies Debut

The Phillies continued to look to the future Sunday afternoon in their series finale with the Padres.

In a season that has been all but over since May, the organization has called up quite a few of its top prospects. On Sunday afternoon, one more of those prospects would make his Major League debut, as Alec Asher was tapped for the start.

Asher, who was acquired in a July trade that sent Cole Hamels to the Rangers, would last 5 2/3 innings, allowing 4 runs and picking up the loss, as the Phillies fell 9-4.
The right-handed Asher, who became the second player acquired in the Hamels trade to be called up by the Phillies, would allow a two-run home run to Matt Kemp with one out in the first, but would begin to settle in from there.

After surrendering a double to lead off the second inning, the 23-year-old Asher would allow just two of the next 15 batters he faced to reach base.

The Phillies would cut a 2-0 deficit in half in the bottom of the second on a solo home run by Cameron Rupp, but the Padres would take the run right back in the third on a home run by Justin Upton.

Asher would get into a bit of trouble in the sixth, allowing consecutive singles with one out before Padres pitcher James Shields hit a two-out RBI single to stretch the Padres’ lead to 4-1. Asher’s afternoon would come to an end at that point, as the Phillies handed things over to the bullpen.

The Phillies’ bullpen would be smacked around from there, allowing five runs in a 9-4 loss to the Padres.

Up Next: The Phillies will now head to New York for a three-game series with the Mets.
