Bullpen Woes Cost Phillies Again in Loss to Brewers

Sloppy fielding combined with poor relief pitching cost the Phillies yet again Wednesday night in a 9-4 loss to the Brewers.

Following a Spring Training that saw manager Ryne Sandberg run drills for fundamentals more than a Little League team, it appears they have done little to help, as the Phillies have allowed 10 unearned runs over their past three games.

With the game knotted at 4-4, Antonio Bastardo took the mound in the eighth. Bastardo would get ahead 0-2 on Mark Reynolds to start the inning before eventually walking the first baseman.

It would be all downhill from there. A fielding error by Ryan Howard would allow Reynolds to score and Ryan Braun would triple home two more runs in the inning to put Milwaukee up 7-4.

Justin De Fratus would allow a two-run home run to Mark Reynolds in the ninth to extend the Brewers' lead, as the Phillies dropped their third straight.

Roberto Hernandez  would pitch admirably in the start, allowing four runs (three earned) in five innings of work, as the right-hander recorded nine strikeouts.

The Phillies would tie the game at four on an RBI single in the fifth, but the bullpen and fielding would soon take its toll on the Phillies chances of winning the game.

The Phillies will close out their series with the Brewers Thursday night, as Cliff Lee looks to help the Phillies avoid being swept.

Notes: Chase Utley (flu) was out of the lineup again Wednesday night, although the second baseman was available off the bench. Cody Asche was out of the lineup Wednesday night after tweaking his hamstring.
