The Magical World of Witchcraft and Wizardry: The 2016 NCAA Tournament

As we muggles all look to make brackets to win the glorious ESPN Tournament Challenge, here are some teams to keep in mind and aid you in your bracket, in terms of JK Rowling’s Harry Potter characters.

Harry Potter, also known as Carolina, is the powerhouse of this tournament. Harry stumbles along his journey to defeat the Dark Lord, (loses to Northern Iowa, Duke, Notre Dame, Louisville, and Texas) but never ceases to disappoint. Harry consistently proves to his enemy, and the Wizarding world, that he is in fact the chosen one. Hicks, Berry and Jackson have all stepped up to show the depth and character of this team extends further than stars Marcus Paige and Brice Johnson. With guidance from the all-wise coach Roy Williams, Carolina has the talent and character of Harry Potter. This is a team every can admire and demands respect, sounds a lot like Harry Potter huh?

The Saint Joseph’s Hawks Demolish Dayton

On Wednesday February 17, 2016, the #15 Dayton Flyers traveled to Saint Joseph’s. This A-10 matchup not only had bragging rights on the line, but first place in the A-10 and a potential trip to the NCAA Tournament. The Flyers entered the game without junior forward Kendall Pollard, who averages 11ppg and 5rpg. This loss forced Dayton to rely on freshman forward Sam Miller to keep offensive production high.

Was Chase Utley's Slide Aggressive or Dirty?

10/11/2015

On Saturday night, with the Dodgers trailing the Mets 2-1 in the seventh inning, a controversial play took place that swung the momentum of the game (and if you ask some people, the momentum of the series already, somehow).

Howie Kendrick stepped to the plate with runners on the corners and grounded one to the middle of the diamond. In an effort to break up a potential double-play, Chase Utley slid hard into (within somewhat of the vicinity of) second base and took out Ruben Tejada, allowing the tying run to score.

Utley was initially ruled out, but the play was overturned and he was put on second base. Tejada would be carted off the field and head to the hospital with a fractured right fibula.

The Dodgers would go on to score three more runs in the inning and win 5-2, tying the series at 1-1.

Kyle had the pleasure of joining Vaughn Johnson (Philly.com) and Nick Piccone (PhillyVoice.com; BleedPhilly.com; PhillyInfluencer.com) on The Straight Shooters to discuss the latest in pro wrestling.

The guys hit on these topics: Jimmy “Superfly” Snuka’s arrest and charges for murder, Zahra Schrieber’s firing from WWE, TNA’s Bram being arrested for domestic violence, and the guys also hit on Raw from this past Monday.

The guys take a few callers and then end the show with a new segment: the Thursday Night Debate.

Listen to the podcast after the break or here if the embedded feature doesn’t work on your device.

WrestleMania 31 (AKA WrestleMania Play Button): A Ranting, Raving Essay Mostly for Neophytes

Hello wrestling and Broad Street Beat fans, one and all. It is I, your favorite troll commenter and paragon of virtue, Dan Aleksander. I'm here to give you the run down and some predictions for the biggest non-sporting sporting event of the year, WrestleMania. It's going down this Sunday night, live on the WWE Network for just $9.99 (or on pay-per-view, if you're Total Deadbeat Rob Lowe).

Chances are this is the one time you probably might watch professional wrestling with someone, as WrestleMania equally draws in pro-wrestling devotees, lapsed fans and those affiliated with said fans but who otherwise have no connection to watching men and women in spandex pretend to grapple. This year's mega-event (The Super Bowl of Professional Wrestling / The World Series of Sports Entertainment) comes to you from Levi's Stadium in San Fra.. San Jo... Santa Clara, California - the house that Jim Harbaugh's $8.00 khakis built.

Here's a terse run down of the super card and its respective competitors, in case you need the primer or refresher course:

2015 Royal Rumble Preview

1/19/2015

Guest post by Ryan Petzar

There is less than a week left until the 2015 WWE Royal Rumble and this year it's coming to you live from the Wells Fargo Center in South Philadelphia. The Rumble is one of WWE's most exciting and longest running shows because nearly anything can happen in the titular main event, and this year's edition looks to be especially exciting.

The match begins with two Superstars in the ring, with additional participants entering every 90 seconds. Each Superstar competes until they are eliminated by being thrown over the top rope. The last man standing in the ring is the winner and gets to compete for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship at Wrestlemania 31.

As of the time of this writing, only ten of the thirty entrants have been announced. It's fair to assume that most of the current male WWE roster will be making an appearance in the match, but there are always surprise entrants. I'll do my best to guess which former Superstars will be showing up to compete for the chance to headline this year's Wrestlemania in Santa Clara, California.

Join me as I preview and predict the 2015 Royal Rumble match.
